L E A D WORKSHOPS - storytelling for professionals
Storytelling for Doctors : Examine
a documentary and two stories, then take a patient's
unique story from one of these creative narratives of
illness and put this in the formal language entered
into medical charts. As part of the process, participants
will write their own narratives of illness, discussing
how, even when the illness is not very severe, medically,
it can impact adversely the lives of the patient and
her family members, even the patient's identity, if
she has to become dependent on others. "Stories help
you understand the past and they teach us valuable lessons.
I believe that, as physicians, we become involved in
the stories of our patients' lives, sometimes as witnesses
telling the story through a medical chart. At other
times, we become players in the story. Many physicians,
through books they have written, have told stories that
have helped the rest of us and provided insights we
may never have had without them," says Dr Abraham Verghese,
Director of the Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics
at the University of Texas in San Antonio, and winner
of the Katha Award for Creative Writing.

Storytelling for Lawyers : The workshop
is an exciting exploration of storytelling in trial
advocacy. How to take raw facts given in a disjointed
fashion by distraught clients/witnesses and make it
into an argument that the judge will remember long after
the closing arguments have been done. Participants will
learn with eminent members of the legal profession,
and a creative teacher and/pr poet, how to prepare their
stories, what arguments to watch for and how to present
them. The art of effective communication is essential
for lawyers, and the course focuses on some of these
techniques and creative use of language - both of the
body and the tongue.

Storytelling for CEO s : Katha offers
a special course for busy management professionals who
need more than business strategies and techniques to
be leaders in their fields. Our guest faculty consists
of Megha Pethe and Keisam Priyakumar . The skill-based
workshop will enhance basic competencies and
understandings of the so-called "softer skills" needed
to hone the sharp market-driven skills students are
taught in the best management schools. It also helps
managers gain a strong sense of culture and the self
- insights that are essential when we do business within
the country and outside. The workshop, in subtle, non-aggressive
ways, helps participants gain self-knowledge, learn
how to interact with others and work as an equal member
of a team, as also to reflect on their own experiences
- through explorations of stories by master wordsmiths.
Time permitting, participants will do a role play or
play simulation games, so that their understanding is
complete, both actually and figuratively.
