Katha Choodamani
Katha initiated the Katha Chudamani Award for Lifetime Literary Achievement in 1999, the tenth year of Katha. It honours a writer of enduring excellence. The Katha Chudamani is for work of exceptional merit, notwithstanding the size of the corpus of work. It is given to a wordsmith whose works showcase creativity of a rare calibre, an inclusive worldview, and daya – a true empathy for and understanding of life and living.
Katha sees the story as an imaginative and powerful instrument for culturelinking. And our best writers, creators of this magic, as people capable of appreciating and helping others appreciate our heritage as also what makes us unique and special as citizens of the large, homogenizing global village.
The Katha Chudamani honours the writer with a citation, a cash award, and with publication, in English translation, of as many of her/his significant works, as possible. The Award also includes a lecture tour that would enable her/him to have discussions with students and teachers, thus exciting them to the riches of our literary heritage.
The first award was presented to Krishna Sobti by His Holiness The Dalai Lama at a gala ceremony at the India International Centre on 19 November 1999.
