Katha, the profit-for-all voluntary organization, is looking for PEOPLE! We have been working with children and women since 1990 and have strong links with the 54 communities we work with.

Katha also works at the leading edge in culturelinking, literary translation and publishing. We see translation as a non-divisive tool for the country as a whole. Uncommon creativities for a common good is our motto.

Uncommon creativities for a common good

That is what Katha strives for. The overall objective is to proactively contribute t o

  • Eliminate poverty through pro-poor, 'inclusionist' economic reforms, at community/ govt. levels.
  • Create an urban model of growth and sustainable living that addresses the needs of the poor.
  • Initiate civil society and academic level dialogue between India and Europe, to exchange experiences and focus on best practice initiatives;
  • Bring together academicians, civil society, NGOs, law makers, writers and urban planners to deliberate and suggest solutions.

But when we started, 15 years ago, our goals were simple enough: We wanted fifteen children, that's all. This was 1990, and we were starting our learning centre in the bustling slum cluster at Govindpuri. But we could find only five.

Why? Because the children had to help support the family said the women. So Katha started in right earnest to bring more money into the hands of the women so that the children can go to school.

Our philosophy "When Women earn Children school." When we started the average family income here was Rs. 600-800/ month (according to a Delhi Government survey). Today members of the Women's Coop earn up to ten times what the family was earning when Katha started its income generation and economic resurgence activities in Govindpuri.

Shakti Khazana has the following components -

The Income Generation programme . Many of the women are members of the Khazana cooperative.

The teacher training programme runs a regular one-year training programme for the women of the area and also has an informal placement service; and

The office lunch programme caters to offices in and around Nehru Place, a large commercial complex in the vicinity of Govindpuri;

The bakery makes biscuits, cookies, puffs, and cakes for sale;

The tailoring and embroidery section helps women to make their own clothes as well as those on order;

The Skills Upgradation Programme . We have been training about 100 women each year in various skills.

THE KHAZANA COOPERATIVE : The women have formed their own cooperative. The Khazana Coop is a self-supporting unit. And the hope is that it will attract more women of the community to come into production, packaging and marketing activities.
