Katha, the profit-for-all voluntary organization, is looking for PEOPLE! We have been working with children and women since 1990 and have strong links with the 54 communities we work with.

Katha also works at the leading edge in culturelinking, literary translation and publishing. We see translation as a non-divisive tool for the country as a whole. Uncommon creativities for a common good is our motto.

katha is a registered nonprofit organization.

Our work within the community of Govindpuri has touched the lives of thousands of families. Katha has a significant presence in this area, a residential settlement of migrant workers and daily wage earners. Katha reaches out to this community through education – Kathashala and other institutions function from here. Katha has also invested in the empowerment of women and the economic resurgence of the community by forming associations such as the women’s Self-Help Groups, family groups such as the Ma Mandal and the Bapu Mandal, and a Guild that encourages entrepreneurship.

SHAKTI KHAZANA is the women's initiative to help economic resurgence for the families of our children.

It includes activities such as skills upgradation, re-skilling and generating income through the women's cooperative. This was started in 1990. The average family income in the 10,000 - 12,000 families in our community then, was Rs 600- Rs 800/month/family, according to a government survey.

Today, our women earn up to Rs 15,000 a month - as teachers, bakers and professional cooks and tailors, thanks to training received from Katha.

(SHE) 2 and Hamara Gaon - This on-the ground community empowers activist spaces. Finding potential in each member of the community, fostering, honing, celebrating and applauding. It networks extensively within the community through the various Mandals/associations for Mothers, Fathers, Adolescent Girls, Boys, Senior Citizens. Started in 1993 with the Ma Mandal, this programme has grown in keeping with the demands both expressed and perceived. Today this includes the Shopkeepers guild initiative, that addresses the issue of better shops, and a Navabhuja Mall.

The Self-Help Groups started by Katha in Govindpuri are active in:

  • Safe water and Sanitation;
  • Health and Housing;
  • Education and Economic resurgence.
